One discovery that comes with moving to Boquete is that weekends stop being a scarce resource. There's no need to squeeze them with desperation, because there's nothing to make up for: the week was already reasonably calm, and Monday doesn't loom like a threat. Even so, there are things very much worth doing here, some of which deserve to be repeated again and again.
Y si el tour incluye Geisha, la experiencia se vuelve directamente memorable.**The coffee tour** is the most obvious and, paradoxically, the one residents themselves put off the most, usually saving it for when visitors come. Several area farms offer full tours that go from the nursery to the coffee tree, from the tree to the mill, from the mill to the roaster, and from the roaster to the cup, comparative tasting included. Even after years of living here, doing it at least once completely reorganizes the way you understand what you drink every morning. And if the tour includes Geisha, the experience becomes downright memorable.
The Caldera hot springs** are about thirty or forty minutes from town: natural hot mineral pools by the river, in a rustic setting that hasn't been turned into a resort. They work especially well on a cloudy day, when the contrast between the cool air and the hot water makes complete sense, and they pair well with a food stop on the way back.
From a one-hour walk between coffee farms to a seven-hour route through cloud forest, passing waterfalls, lookouts and rural roads. With everything on offer around the valley, you can string together months of weekends without repeating a trail, without even counting the variations the season introduces: the same path in March and in October are two different places.
The area has established rafting operators on Chiriquí's rivers, with different difficulty levels depending on the time of year, and canopy tours through the treetops. There's also the simpler option of spending the day by the Caldera river, with no plan beyond cold water, shade and a cooler.
And the fifth activity, which doesn't look like one, is **doing nothing in particular**. Market in the morning, a long breakfast, a bookstore, walking around town, sitting down to watch the afternoon pass. It's a completely valid way to spend the weekend here, probably the one most true to the place's character, and the one people miss most once they eventually move away.
An important note for the calendar: in January comes the Flower and Coffee Festival, the biggest event of the year, which transforms the town for several days with gardens, music, food and a crowd that multiplies the local population. It's spectacular and worth experiencing at least once, but it takes planning: lodging sells out months in advance, and traffic becomes, for once, an actual problem.
