Arriving alone in a new place is hard at any age, and even more so when the move coincides with a major life change: a retirement, a separation, a different country. Boquete, however, has an unusual advantage over other small towns: a lot of the people who live here also arrived from somewhere else at some point, remember exactly what that feels like, and tend to be willing to shorten the path for someone else. The door is more ajar than usual.
The first thing that works, and almost no one plans it, is repetition. The café you always go to, the corner bakery, the Thursday class, the same market stall every week. In a town where everyone circulates through the same five or six places, showing up consistently produces recognition; recognition produces a greeting; the greeting produces conversation; and conversation, over time, produces friendship. There's no more effective shortcut than that, and the best part is it requires no special social skill or forcing awkward situations. You just have to keep showing up.
The second thing is shared activities. Hiking, cycling, birdwatching, yoga, dance classes, book clubs, choirs, workshops. Meeting people while doing something else eliminates, at the root, the awkwardness of "making friends" as a stated goal, which is exactly what makes the task feel heavy as an adult. Plus, a shared activity gives you something to talk about from day one, which is exactly what's missing when two strangers try to connect with no context.
The Tuesday market serves a similar function, though in the format of a public square. Many people go less for the vegetables than for the encounter: it's the day half the town crosses paths, catches up on pending conversations, and finds out what's going on. Going regularly, even when you don't need anything, is a cheap social investment.
Volunteering is another path, and probably the richest of all. There are local organizations dedicated to education, animal welfare, the environment and support for neighboring communities, and working with them puts you in contact with Panamanians and foreigners alike, around something that matters. Friendships born from working together on something tend to be sturdier than ones born at a cocktail party.
And there's one piece of advice worth more than all the others combined: learn Spanish, or improve what you have. Boquete's international community is welcoming, and it's perfectly possible to live comfortably within it for years without speaking the language. But staying there means only knowing half the town, and probably the less interesting half. Speaking Spanish opens up relationships with neighbors, shopkeepers, producers and workers who otherwise will never go beyond a polite greeting on the street. It also changes how people who've lived here all along see you.
El resto es paciencia y reciprocidad. Acepta invitaciones aunque no tengas ganas. The rest is patience and reciprocity. Accept invitations even when you don't feel like it. Invite people over too, even if the house isn't perfect. And give it time: real friendships take months to form, here and anywhere in the world. The difference is that in a small town, once formed, they hold on their own.
